Director’s Report
Scott W. Paxman, P.E.
Weber Basin Water Conservancy District

June 2016
It has been a very interesting year with the Flint Michigan lead issues and the public media attention it has generated. The AWWA Board of Directors convened a conference call a couple of weeks ago to discuss where the Association should stand on the issue of lead in the distribution laterals and service lines. The bottom line is that lead in drinking water is a public health issue and AWWA supports the recommendations of the National Drinking Water Advisory Council (an advisory group to the US Environmental Protection Agency) to proactively remove lead service lines. This, however, is not a simple task; it will take time, it is extremely expensive, needs to be done systematically, and local conditions and priorities will influence the effort.
It is also important to note that because in-home plumbing and fixtures may contain lead, the work to “fully remove” lead from water is bigger than simply removing the lead service lines.

ACE is coming up is just a few weeks, so make your plans to attend, if you haven’t already. It should be a great conference.

Thanks for all you do, both at the Section level and the Association level.
