We appreciate all of those that came out to the Intermountain Section’s Annual Conference in Logan this past month. We had a great turnout, a lot of very good technical presentations, and the support from the exhibitors was fantastic.  The jury is still out on the venue, so please let us know how you felt about having on the Utah State University Campus.

From the Association, below are a couple of the pressing issues in Washington:

Opportunity coming for WIFIA fix in House transportation bill

Word from Capitol Hill is that the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will begin mark-up on its own long-term surface transportation bill the last week of October, bringing another opportunity to advance the water sector’s long-sought-after correction to the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA). The correction is in the transportation bill passed by the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, marking an important precedence for the WIFIA repair. If the correction does not appear in the bill generated by the House committee, AWWA and others will seek to have it offered as an amendment. Watch for a Legislative Alert soon from the Government Affairs Office.

Cybersecurity bill scheduled for floor action

The full Senate is to consider S. 754, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act. AWWA has endorsed the primary features of the bill: a voluntary approach emphasizing greater information sharing by federal authorities about cyber threats and means of remediation from an attack. Similar legislation has passed in the House, but there are slight differences between the bills in the House and Senate, meaning a conference committee will be needed to produce one compromise bill before it can finally be enacted. We’ll keep following this and updating as we know more.

The Intermountain Section of AWWA is full of enthusiastic and involved members. We appreciate all you do. Keep up the great work.
