Accept the Call to Action Challenge by Volunteering for Water Week

By:  Alane Boyd

At the 2015 Annual Conference in Logan we were treated to a great Opening Session Keynote address by a panel of experts led by Richard Bay, General Manager for Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District.  We were all challenged to do a better job of talking to others outside of the water industry and conveying the importance of water.  The panel focused on important aspects of water and water’s positive impact on the economy and public health.

Everyone came out of the Opening General Session energized and inspired to take the challenge.  However, it has now been two months since the conference and I wonder how many of you have made steps to communicate the importance of water.  Don’t fret, because the Intermountain Section has a perfect opportunity for you to connect with your neighbors through your local library.  The Section, along with our Water Week Partners, are happy to once again provide libraries throughout Utah and Idaho with materials to help celebrate Water Week.  We are currently looking for volunteers to coordinate with their local libraries to set up a display, read during story hour, and other activities that show the importance of water during Water Week (first week in May).

Sign up today at:  http://www.ims-awwa.org/events/event_details.asp?id=699496&group

Each volunteer will receive a kit of materials in early January consisting of books and materials for a display.  Shortly after receiving the package we ask that the volunteer visit or contact their library to introduce yourself to the library contact and deliver Water Week Library Bag. It would be ideal for the volunteer to spend some time discussing Water Week and this year’s theme of “Water Conservation: It begins with you!” Additional activities such as putting together a display, reading during story hour, or helping with a book club may also be done by the volunteer. Training will be provided to all volunteers through web conferences. Please consider accepting the Call to Action by volunteering!
