During 2014 the IMS Safety and Security committee was happy to give presentations at more than eight different locations throughout the intermountain section. The main focus of the presentations was related to safety and security in the water industry. Some of the topics included: how to implement an effective safety program, hazards and risks to be aware of in our industry, case studies to learn from, personal protective equipment to utilize, confined space safety, and many more. The committee has also been sharing some of these topics in brief monthly safety/security posts.

The committee was excited to implement a new safety awards program during 2014. This program recognizes both individuals and organizations for their outstanding safety performance in the water industry. During the annual conference, two individuals and five organizations were recognized for their outstanding performance. The individuals were Ricky Velez, from the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake and Sandy, and Ricky Necaise, from Granger-Hunter Improvement District. The organizations were Taylorsville-Bennion Improvement District, Granger-Hunter Improvement District, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, Pleasant Grove City Water/Sewer Department, and Ames Construction, Inc.

If you know of anyone who should be recognized for their safety efforts or performance, or if you’d like us to come to give a presentation or help with safety or security in some other way, please let us know. Our committee is made up of safety professionals and water industry professionals that have a great deal of experience and expertise. Most of us also have very successful safety and security programs at our workplace and we are willing to share what has worked for us.

If you’d like to take advantage of any of these programs, or have any questions about them, please contact Brian Callister at brianc@jvwcd.org. Also, watch for a safety/security photo contest in the near future.

Thanks,

Brian callister
