I have only been to two Board meetings at the Association level, but I am already impressed as to the quality of the meetings and the important topics discussed and voted on there. I would like to discuss a couple briefly here. First is the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA), which has been passed by both the House and Senate in the past few weeks and was just signed into law by President Obama this past week. This has been a monumental effort by the Association, as well as all of the Sections helping to lobby this through the process. Although it is mostly aimed for helping to fund larger projects, $5 million to $20 million, through low interest loans and loan guarantees, it will be a benefit to every state in the nation. New and replacement of our water infrastructure is one of the leading issues facing us and this is definitely a step in the right direction. Secondly, the Association was successful in receiving a grant from EPA for training and technical assistance to improve water quality and to help enable small public water systems to provide safe drinking water. Since our Section is already giving a considerable effort in this regard, it may not change significantly, but it should allow the Association to develop and deliver 51 in-person workshops, primarily aimed at training small systems.

There are many other exciting and fascinating changes on the horizon with the Association and Sections, from the new Philanthropic program to the AWWA India Business Plan. Please take time to visit the Association web site for more information.

Lastly, I would like to again congratulate Merril Bingham for his induction in to the Water Industry Hall of Fame. It was well deserving.

I look forward to attending the New Director’s Training session in July to a better understand my responsibilities as Director and representative of the Intermountain Section. I hope you all have an enjoyable and productive summer.
