Scholarships

The Intermountain Section of the American Water Works Association is pleased to announce the availability of a scholarship program to support students pursuing studies in the field of water quality, supply, and treatment in the Intermountain West.

Three separate scholarships will be available, including an undergraduate scholarship in science and engineering, a graduate scholarship in science and engineering, and a scholarship to support an outstanding minority student in the field. Awards will be given in the amounts ranging from $1,000 to $1,500. Every applicant will also be awarded a one year subscription to Journal AWWA and a one year AWWA student membership.

A completed application form and all required supporting materials should be received by IMS AWWA no later than November 2, 2010.  The application form and other supporting information must be submitted electronically as one pdf file with the exception of the letters of recommendation.  All application submission information can be found on the IMS AWWA website at ims-awwa.org. The recipient will be notified and the award sum will be made available by December 1st, 2010.

Scholarship Recipients

Diversity --- Oscar Marquina
Oscar Marquina is a junior studying Environmental Engineering at Utah State University. He was a crew leader for the Utah Conservation Corps, and was recently awarded an Engineering Undergraduate Research Scholarship to conduct research on water quality. He mentors elementary through high school students, and is also involved in Engineers Without Borders.

Undergraduate--- Allia Abu- Ramaileh
Allia Abu-Ramaileh is a junior studying Environmental Engineering at Utah State University. She has a breadth of work experience including water quality monitoring in Canada, working for the Bountiful City Engineering Department, and volunteer work in Jordan and Senegal. She’s the current vice-president of the Society of Environmental Engineering Students.

Graduate --- Jon Farrell
Jon Farrell is pursuing a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering at Utah State University, researching the use of duckweed to remove nutrients from wastewater. He also works for WesTech Engineering as a designer for water treatment systems. Jon mentored the WEAU student wastewater design team and led them to the National competition in Florida last month.
